Jagendorf, an American author of numerous books, plays and short stories about or based on folktales. Born in Austria, Moritz Jagendorf (1888-1981) moved to New York at the age of fifteen. His writing career began with plays but shifted to the retelling of popular legends and folk stories for children. He served as an officer in the New York State Folklore Society and the International Folklore Congress, and was also a practicing dentist.
